Since 2004, May 17 has established itself the single most important date for LGBTI communities to mobilize on a worldwide scal, not as one centralised campaign but as a moment that everyone can take advantage of to take action under IDAHOTB (International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia).
Now, this important date is celebrated in more than 130 countries, including 37 where same-sex acts are ilegal.
These day mobilisations unite millions of people around the world to support the recognition of human rights for all, irrespective of sexual orientation or gender identity or expression.
Every year the global community of sexual and gender minorities identifies one specific focus issue for the celebrations around May 17th.
The theme of this year will be “ALLIANCES FOR SOLIDARITY” since we know no battle can be won in isolation.
We, as LGBT community, need alliances in order to ensure safety, fight violence, lobby for legal change, and campaign to change hearts and minds. For this reason, this year focus can create a valuable opportunity for all of us to reach out to our current partners to reinforce our bond, to reach out to new partners to raise awareness of our commonalities, and to engage in collective action around the Day.
