New Celebrate Condoms Campaign: Safe Sex Can Be Fun!

It’s no secret that condom use among gay and bisexual men has been declining for some time. One of the reasons will be the knowledge, thanks to research, that men who are on a variety of HIV drugs are much less likely to pass the virus on during sex. However, a recent study, published in the Lancet HIV journal, raises some serious questions about the introduction of pharmaceutical drugs such as PrEP in developing countries with high levels of infection without a strong package of educational support to encourage condom use.

The study, which involved 17,000 gay and bisexual men in the Australian states of Victoria and New South Wales, shows that, between 2013 and 2017, the numbers of HIV-negative men taking the pills to protect themselves rose from 2 per cent to 24 per cent. During that period, the proportion of HIV-negative men on PrEP having casual anal sex went up from 1 per cent to 16 per cent, despite a drop in consistent condom use from 46 per cent to 31 per cent.

Whilst PrEP has proven to be wildly popular amongst young gay and bisexual men in Australia, it is also being linked to general sense of complacency when it comes to safe sexual practices. Whilst new diagnoses of HIV among gay and bisexual men in NSW have nearly halved over the past five years, rates of other STI’s such as gonorrhoea and syphilis are going up as more strains which are resistant to antibiotics are spreading rapidly in Australia. A “super- superbug” variety of gonorrhoea landed in Australia for the first time in April, when a Queensland Health spokesman confirmed two cases of the strain which is resistant to multiple antibiotics were detected.

So here’s where Australian based brand Celebrate Condoms comes into play. At Celebrate, they believe in a sustainable, ethical and harmonious world and are trying to put the FUN back into safe sex with our unique, world first, super thin latex rainbow striped condoms! The unique printing process they use is on the inside of the condom and it uses safe and tested colours. They have even added tropical flavoured lube to complete the experience!

Whilst condoms have traditionally been viewed as a rather ‘boring’ product, their aim is to challenge this negative stereotype and show that safe sex CAN be fun!
